Spinal Cord Injuries

Some injuries suffered due to another's negligence may heal over time, but spinal cord injuries may leave victims with permanent disabilities. A spinal cord injury is defined as an injury of the nerves contained within the spinal canal often associated with trauma to the spinal column.

A spinal cord injury can be categorized as complete which means that nerve damage has obstructed all signals between the brain and body, or incomplete meaning that nerve damage has obstructed some of the signals between the brain and body.

In the most severe cases, a spinal cord injury may render the victim a paraplegic or quadriplegic.

Paraplegia: Complete paralysis of the lower half of the body including both legs, usually caused by damage to the spinal cord.
Quadriplegia: Complete paralysis of the body from the neck down, usually caused by damage to the spinal cord.

Most spinal cord injuries are due to trauma to the spine often caused by accidents including motor vehicle accidents, motorcycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, slip and fall accidents and swimming and diving accidents.

If you or your loved one has suffered a spinal cord injury due to negligence, it is important that you contact a personal injury law firm that specializes in serious injury cases.

Calton & Burns, Attorneys at Law, have over 25 years experience in personal injury matters. Our experienced team of lawyers will investigate the facts, evaluate your claim, determine which parties and insurance companies are responsible, and handle all of the details of preparing and presenting your case.

Your ability to make a claim for personal injury rests upon three factors:

  1. First is liability, that is, who caused the accident and is legally responsible;
  2. Second is the establishment of an amount of damages to which you are legally entitled, and;
  3. Third, the ability to collect the damages, specifically what sources, such as insurance or individual assets, are available for payment of a settlement or damage award.

As attorneys, we help our clients establish the liability, evaluate and prove the damages, and collect the settlement or judgment. We handle all of the details and are prepared to help our clients get through the hardships and stress created by a serious and often permanent injury.
